A Brief History

Over 60 years ago, Delawareans did not have an ophthalmology resource beyond the general care offered by local Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat doctors. Thanks to pediatrician Dr. Margaret Handy, Norman L. Cutler, M.D. became the state’s first board-certified ophthalmologist in 1947.

As a result of Dr. Cutler’s efforts and insights, his original practice continued to grow long after his retirement thanks to Robert Abel, Jr., M.D. and in 1980, became incorporated as Delaware Ophthalmology Consultants.

Today, nine ophthalmologists and three optometrists continue to provide comprehensive eye care through prevention, patient advocacy, community education and missionary medicine.
