Cataract

A cataract is a clouding of the natural lens of the eye that affects vision. Most cataracts are age-related but can occur prematurely from genetics, trauma or disease states like diabetes or steroid use. Cataracts are very common in older people and are the number one cause of reversible vision problems in the elderly.

By age 80, more than 50% of all Americans either have a cataract or have had cataract surgery.

Our doctors are the most experienced surgeons in the area:

  • We have successfully completed more than 50,000 cataract surgeries
  • The operation takes under 10 minutes and is done as an outpatient in a local surgery center
  • The return to normal function often takes less than a week
  • The complication rate in the hands of a DOC surgeon is less than 1%
  • We are committed to exceeding your expectations

Retina

The retinal layer of the eye is a patchwork of millions of light-sensitive cells called rods and cones, as well as other nerve cells that receive and organize visual information. Your retina sends this information to the brain through your optic nerve and the brain deciphers and translates this information into our ability to see.

Our doctors are proficient in the diagnosis and management of diseases of the retina and vitreous:

  • Untreated, some retinal diseases can cause severe visual disability
  • Depending on your condition, diseases of the retina can be improved with treatment
  • We are committed to stop or slow the progression and preserve, improve or cure the underlying problem

LASIK

LASIK is the most commonly performed laser eye surgery to treat myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism. The word ‘LASIK’ is an acronym for ‘laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis’. The laser is used to reshape the cornea to enable the light entering the eye to better focus on the retina for clearer vision just as your glasses or contact lenses had done.

Dr. Barrett is the Delaware leader and most experienced LASIK surgeon:

  • Dr. Barrett is extremely successful with a very low complication rate
  • LASIK surgery is essentially painless and takes only about 15 minutes for both eyes
  • LASIK is performed in an outpatient setting

Primary Eye Care

A routine eye exam is the key to maintaining good eye health. The exam ensures healthy vision by checking visual acuity, glasses or contact lens prescription, coordination of the eye muscles, eye pressure and the health of the different structures of the eye. Your eyes will be dilated for the exam.

We are strong advocates for routine preventative eye exams:

  • Scheduling a visit for a routine eye exam? Not all insurances cover these exams
  • Prior to your appointment, you must contact your insurance provider to determine if part or all of these exams will be covered or there will be an out of pocket expense at the time of your visit
